Functional Medicine Protocol for PCOS:

1. Dietary Guidelines:

  • Emphasize a whole foods, low-glycemic diet to stabilize blood sugar levels.
  • Prioritize lean proteins, vegetables, and healthy fats.
  • Reduce intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars.
  • Incorporate green tea for its potential benefits in improving insulin sensitivity, reducing inflammation, and regulating hormones.
  • Include prebiotic-rich foods such as onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, bananas, and whole grains (as tolerated) to support gut health and nourish beneficial gut bacteria. 

2. Supplements:

a. Myo-Inositol and D-Chiro Inositol:

  • Take a combination of myo-inositol and D-chiro inositol in a ratio of 40:1.
  • Dose: 2,000 mg myo-inositol + 50 mg D-chiro inositol, twice daily.

b. Magnesium:

  • Magnesium helps with insulin sensitivity and many other important bodily functions.
  • Dose: 200-400 mg elemental magnesium per day.

c. N-Acetylcysteine (NAC):

  • Supports ovarian function and reduces oxidative stress.
  • Dose: 600-1,800 mg per day.

d. Fish Oil:

  • Omega-3 fatty acids support hormonal balance and reduce inflammation.
  • Dose: 1,000-4,000 mg EPA and DHA combined, daily.

e. Vitamin D:

  • Essential for hormone regulation.
  • Combine with Vitamin K2 for optimal absorption.
  • Dose: 2,000-5,000 IU per day, or as recommended based on individual levels.

f. Berberine:

  • Improves insulin sensitivity and improves gut health.Dose: 500-1,500 mg per day, in divided doses with meals.

g. Chromium:

  • Supports insulin function.
  • Dose: 200-400 mcg per day.

h. Cinnamon:

  • Helps regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Dose: 1,000-2,000 mg per day.

i. Zinc:

  • Supports immune function and hormonal balance.
  • Dose: 15-30 mg per day.

j. Prebiotic Fiber (e.g., Sunfiber or FiberMend):

  • – Supports the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and improves insulin sensitivity.
  • – Dose: 5-10 grams per day, gradually increasing to avoid digestive discomfort.

k. Probiotics:

  • – Choose a high-quality probiotic with a diverse strain profile.
  • – Dose: Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.

l. Green Tea Extract:

  • – Contains antioxidants and may help improve insulin sensitivity.
  • – Dose: 250-500 mg per day, standardized for EGCG content.

3. Lifestyle Modifications
